MTN Nigeria secured one of four licenses to operate digital GSM (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) telephony on February 9, 2001, from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Following this, on May 16th  2001, MTN emerged the first telecommunications company to make a commercial call on its GSM network. August 2001 saw the company launch full commercial operations beginning with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
